How to Choose a Diamond Grinding Wheel Bond: Vitrified vs Resin vs Metal vs Electroplated

2026-10-20

Start from the workpiece, not the wheel

The first question is never "which wheel" but "what is being ground and what does a good part look like". Carbide saw sharpening tolerates a wide process window; PCD edge grinding does not. Map three inputs before selecting a bond: workpiece material and hardness, stock removal per pass, and target surface finish.

As a rule of thumb: the harder and more brittle the workpiece, the finer the grit and the softer the action you want. The more stock you must remove, the more you need a free-cutting bond that exposes fresh grit continuously.

Vitrified: free-cutting and dressable

Vitrified bonds are the default for PCD/PCBN insert grinding because they cut freely and dress in seconds on the machine. The porosity carries coolant and swarf away, and form holding is good enough for production batches. The trade-off is lower bond strength — thin fragile profiles are better served by metal or electroplated.

Resin: the versatile workhorse

Resin bond wheels cover the widest window of carbide and ceramic work. They run cool, forgive less-than-perfect setups, and produce fine finishes. Expect to true them with a brake dresser and accept shorter life than metal bonds in aggressive applications.

Metal & electroplated: when profile is the product

Metal bonds hold abrasive tenaciously — right for dicing blades, glass grinding and long production runs. Electroplated single-layer wheels go one step further: the profile is plated to the exact form and never dressed. If your part geometry is the specification, electroplated is the answer; if you need adjustable profiles, choose metal bond with sintered segments.

Quick decision table

PCD/PCBN edge grinding → vitrified. Carbide blanking & saw sharpening → resin. Glass, ceramics, dicing → metal. Complex profiles & small bores → electroplated. Hardened steel or cast iron → switch to CBN in the same bond logic.
